Five Koshas ~ Layers of Existence

Five Koshas: Understanding the Subtle Layers of Our Existence
In the deep wisdom of Sanatan Dharma, the self is not simply body or mind, it is a layered reality. The Upanishads describe five Koshas, or sheaths, that veil the true self, the Atman. These layers help us understand not only who we are but how we experience the world, from the gross to the most subtle.
Let us journey through these five sheaths to uncover the spiritual map that guides us from ignorance to self-realization.
Annamaya Kosha ~ The Physical Body
“Anna” means food, and Annamaya Kosha is the sheath made of food. It is the most tangible layer, our physical body, nourished by what we consume.
We tend to identify with this body, forgetting that it is merely the outer shell. This Kosha is born, grows, decays, and dies.
"The body is the costume, not the character. Knowing this is the beginning of self-inquiry." ~ Adarsh Singh
By keeping the body healthy and balanced through Ahimsa, right diet, and yoga, we prepare the foundation for spiritual evolution.
Pranamaya Kosha ~ The Energy Body
Beyond the physical lies the Pranic sheath, composed of life-force energy or Prana. It sustains the body and operates through breath, heartbeat, and metabolism.
Pranayama (breath control) is the key to mastering this Kosha. When disturbed, it causes disease; when aligned, it promotes vitality and inner clarity.
“You do not breathe; you are breathed by the universe. Every inhale is a divine affirmation of your presence.” ~ Adarsh Singh
Manomaya Kosha ~ The Mental Body
This layer consists of thoughts, emotions, and the reactive mind. It is the realm of likes, dislikes, desires, fears, and memories.
The Manas (mind) processes sensory inputs and governs our emotional responses. It often keeps us trapped in Samsara, the cycle of birth and death.
To purify this sheath, one must practice mindfulness, prayer, and mental discipline.
“When the mind is trained to observe without attachment, it becomes a window to the soul.” ~ Adarsh Singh
Vijnanamaya Kosha ~ The Wisdom Body
This is the intellect, the layer of discernment and intuitive wisdom. It allows us to differentiate truth from falsehood, permanent from impermanent.
It’s where Buddhi (intellect) resides, and through it we gain access to spiritual insight and self-reflection.
“Wisdom is not knowing everything; it is knowing what is worth knowing.” ~ Adarsh Singh
This Kosha gets refined through study of scriptures (Svadhyaya), satsang, contemplation, and meditation.
Anandamaya Kosha ~ The Bliss Body
The subtlest of all, Anandamaya Kosha is the sheath of bliss. It is the closest veil to the Atman, experienced in deep sleep, deep meditation, or divine joy.
This layer is touched when the mind is still, and the ego is dissolved. It is the pure joy of being, beyond reason or stimulus.
“Ananda is not a pleasure. It is the smile of the soul when it remembers its true nature.” ~ Adarsh Singh
Peeling the Sheaths to Realize the Self
The five Koshas are not obstacles but gateways, each inviting deeper awareness. As we peel these layers through Yogic practices, Self-inquiry, and devotion, we begin to realize that:
👉 We are not the body (Annamaya),
👉 Nor the breath (Pranamaya),
👉 Nor the mind (Manomaya),
👉 Nor even the wisdom (Vijnanamaya),
👉 Nor just the bliss (Anandamaya),
👉 We are That ~ the unchanging Atman.
The concept of the five Koshas is a precious gift from Sanatan Dharma. It helps us explore the multi-dimensional nature of our being, guiding us on the sacred path from the periphery of existence to the innermost core, where the Self shines eternally.
“When you transcend the sheaths, you do not become something new. You remember who you’ve always been.” ~ Adarsh Singh
